Web 2.0 has made a huge impact in education. There are many different web tools that allow consumers to share information with each other that impacts education.
The first tool that came to mind is ratemyprofessor.com, This is a site were students can rate and review professors. Students can review professors before registering for a specific course. Reviews often times include whether or not they believe a specific professor is a good teacher, how difficult the professor may be, and how much homework the professor normally gives. This allows students use social networking to get to know more about their professors, and get useful information about them before they register for a class.
Discussion boards impact the learning process greatly. There are countless of different tools that can be used for discussions such as Moodle, Facebook, Gmail, Blackboard, and many more. This allows consumers to collaborate and share ideas to enhance learning. People may discuss and share about a certain class, assignments, or even learning materials. A discussion board is great to avenue to get informed rather than getting informed through the main source or provider. Web 2.0 had changed and is continuing to change the face of education!
I have learned about many useful technologies that I plan on applying to my youth soccer teams. I really liked the idea of making a Facebook Group page for my soccer team to share useful information. The Facebook team page can be used to communicate with the team about their individual homework, current events in soccer, educational material to enhance learning, and even make posts to motivate the team.
I have found many articles on “Scoop it” to be very educational and informative on current events, this will make it very easy to share these articles with my team. I can also use podcasts to create lectures with visuals to be posted on the Facebook page, for things to be working on during practice. This can enhance the learning process for players to start thinking about specific tactical principles before we work on them on the training field. This Facebook page will offer a new platform for sharing information, discussion, and learning. This is something that I plan on applying will be a great advantage for the team!
Podcasts are an excellent way of using different audio segments for learning and making them accessible to an audience. You can podcast all types of audio content such as music, lectures, news, or even talk shows. Your audience can easily access any podcast to their mobile device, leaving a opportunity for a wealth of audio segments and information to be easily accessed.
Using podcasts offer many advantages and can positively affect the learning process. Imagine if your Professor had a podcast that included all class lectures that you can go back and review. This would allow access to students to review lectures at any time and make it easier for students to review and learn the class material. This would be the equivalent to having all your class time and lectures "On Demand!" There are also possibilities of enhanced podcasts that allow you to include images that can be hyperlinked to websites that can add to the learning process. This will allow your audience to view information on the web while they are listening to the audio segments your podcast.
Doug Hoagland, from the Fresno Bee, Wrote an article on how professors at Fresno State are now using podcasts, and how Students are responding to these podcasts. Scott Sailor, Assistant professor of Kinesiology, supports the use of podcasts for learning, “Then I know they are getting the material multiple times. I’d like to reach the students right where they are,” says Sailor. Fresno State students that participated in courses containing podcasts were great advocates for the benefits of using podcasts in the classroom. Check out what some of the other students at Fresno State had to say in the article below!
I created a Facebook page for soccer coaches! This is a page where soccer coaches can come and share content, current events, future events, and discussions within a group of people who all share the same passion of coaching! I have developed many friends on facebook who are soccer coaches, what better to offer a platform where coaches can discuss and network with people who share the same passion! Looking forward to developing this page so that I can eventually start to invite coaches. Check it out and let me know if you have any good ideas or recommendations regarding this page!
The article by Dr. Nicole A. Buzzeto-More is a great read on how prominent social networking has become today and how it is being used today by educators to provide new ways of learning . Dr. Buzzeto-More completed a survey consisting of 186 people on how using facebook or a social networking can be beneficial in a learning environment.
